Overview

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s endorsement of social media as viable disclosure channels for publicly traded companies has investors, executives, legal departments and communications professionals trying to make sense of the implications of market moving information surfacing on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels. A Stanford University study recently found that tweeting can actually improve the liquidity of smaller, lesser-known companies. But there is also plenty of uncertainty about whether engaging in social media is actually beneficial for a company’s valuation. Executives are cagey about messages snowballing out of control, not to mention the effects of false rumors circulating on Twitter.
